Hi Jon,

My name is Sanjay and I am from India. I read you message regarding finding a job in Sweden.

Here is my experience:
I went to Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg for a Master's Degree in Production Management in Sep 94. The course was given in English and it was meant mainly for foreign nationals. There were students from all over Europe. I passed out in March 94 and am back in India now; working for Price Waterhouse.

Finding a job is indeed difficult as there is quite a bit of un-employment in Sweden. There are a large number of refugees from Iran, former Yougslavia and Africa. So if you are a non-European, you become a part of them and are in the same queue for jobs. Without knowledge of the Swedish language it is even more difficult.

A lot of us in my class tried to find jobs in Sweden (even the European nationals). It was next to impossible. Even if you manage to find one, the Swedish Government will tell the potential employeer that "since there are so many Swedish students of the same qualification, why don't you hire one of the"'. So those who found jobs but were denied by the Swedish Government ended by being PhD students in the same university.

However there is one enterprising Indian guy who made it. His name is Sridhar (sirdhar@prosolvia.se). He did his summers in Prosolvia, a software company into virtual reality. He made himself so valuable to the company (by finding markets in Asia) that the company approached to Governer of Gothenburg to grant him a work permit. The argument was that his presence in the company would greatly enhance the development of the company. The Government could not deny the Governers recommendation.

Ofcourse the easiest way to find a job in Sweden is to marry your Swedish fiancee and become a Swede.

Sanjay
