I have done extensive research on the Kilburg family of the Eifel Region of Germany (aka Kylburg, Kylburg, Kilberg, Kiehlburg, Kilburger, and Kilburger and a variety of other medieval phonetic spellings). One family member, Dr. Johann-Philipp Kilburger, in the 17th century left the Rhineland-Palatinate to enter the service of Gustavus Adolphus II and became the Special Attache' of the King of Sweden to Riga and Moscow. In 1674 he wrote a landmark book entitled :A Short Report Concerning the Russian Commerce, As it Shall Be Handled in 1674 With Imports and Exports In thee Whole of Russia. He died in 1721 leaving 7 children. I do not know if there is a tie to the Swedish Kilbergs, but it is of course possible.
Many of the Kilbergs in the US are of the Jewish faith tradition, the Kilburgs tend to be Catholic or Lutheran. What was your Grand-father's religion.
